 GM Fox armoured car conversion
A number of Fox armoured car chassis were imported into Australia in an ill-fated attempt to build a local heavy armoured car. The chassis were disposed of to civillian operators who created a number of conversions, including this street sweeper located at the Melbourne Tank Museum.
John Belfield acquired this interesting conversion many years ago. It was built by the Preston City Council in Melbourne and was a remarkable streamlined design. John pointed out the mudguards and other parts of the body frame were made using 2" gal water pipe slit and rolled to form the edges which were then welded to flat sections.
GM 270 engine was rear mounted. The driving position has a bewildering array of levers and controls including a CMP winch handbrake.
The design was fairly symmetrical front and rear.
